My first collection of silkscreened items were cloth napkin and dish towel sets. I created these while learning how to do silkscreening.
While earning my MFA, I did an internship with Appetite in Portland, Oregon. There I saw how the two owners created products from their designs. This was why I selected the two sisters' small shop for my internship, to learn about putting my own artistic designs onto products for home and garden.
They had a great layout in the store, a front shop with a big workspace in the back. They would lay out large bolts of fabric onto a huge table and hand-print their designs over them, then cut and sew the printed fabric into items like bags and such.
So for the class where I learned how to make silkscreens, which I took in Ashland, Oregon, several years later, I decided to start with cloth napkiins and dishtowels. These are everyday items that many people use, and they cut down on waste by being reusable.
I drew my designs and then arranged them on the screens. My focus for this project was a sort of desert/bohemian style I just rather like. They include cactus, a cow skull, a feather design, and others. It was really fun transferring the designs onto the fabrics.
I've sold most of these, and I look forward to creating more linen sets, branching out into pillows and throws, and designing new imagery to create new screens.
